So the real questions are twofold for a review of Astria Ascending. A certain amount of expectation of prior research is useful in this case. You can check that out here, if you haven’t already.

As soon as it was clear we would be getting a full review copy of Astria Ascending I was quick to volunteer to pick up the full game, because, well… the preview of the game had already whetted my appetite, and I had a lot of positive things to say about the original preview event. Not in the sense that it has to be a negative one or anything like that, but in the sense that this is the first time that I’ve reviewed a game I previously previewed. Get someone that’s a fan of the genre to cover the genre in the future, please. This is a weird review for me to be writing.

Blatantly evident by this garbage review. “very easy” difficulty, right? That’s 30 hours with no use of Focus Points to beat the game. You’re also rewarded with bonus Focus Points when you use characters properly in combat, ie a healer heals or buffs other characters or a black magic practitioner hits an enemy with a spell they’re weak against. In combat, when you accumulate Focus Points, you push those bumper buttons to increase or decrease the damage and/or affects of whatever attack or spell you use, and the balance comes in when you need to decide if it’s better to attack, defend, enhance characters, or build Focus Points up for more powerful attacks in this games’ frequently difficult battles. What’s the Focus System? On top of your Xbox controller, there are these bumper buttons in front of the FPS “shoot” and “aim” triggers. It honestly sounds like whoever wrote the review was someone that was burdened with the game more so than someone that enjoys the genre and that would have taken the time to really learn the intricacies of the game. I’m at 30 hours in, and I’m hooked to the point of working to complete every side quest and see and do everything in the world. I’ve really been enjoying Astria Ascending. The map system provided for when users are inside of a dungeon are also dismal, reducing the rooms down to just flat rectangles with no topography detail and a character head that stays stationary, so you're never quite sure where you actually are in a room. There is no way to auto equip optimal equipment for your character, there's no indicator of when new jobs are available, nor is there any sort of indication when a side quest is available in an area. Eight demigods with four job slots each containing three potential jobs equals way too many skill trees.Īside from the shoehorned mechanics, the majority of Astria Ascending's shortcomings come in the form of general quality of life improvements. Each combat style offers a corresponding skill tree that provides an avenue for equipping your character with different magic spells, weaponry, and other useful items. Overcomplication is a theme for Astria Ascending as even the game's skill tree systems revolve around each of the eight characters taking on four different "jobs." For each unlocked job slot players can choose one of three combat styles.
